RESTORE EUSTON'S GREEN SPACES
The Issue
St. James's Gardens was an important green space in Euston, an old burial ground with mature trees which was enjoyed by many people. It was destroyed 9 years ago to enable the construction of High Speed 2 railway infrastructure. Since then, residents and visitors have been subject to stress, noise, pollution and disruption of the HS2 construction.
Lendlease plans to build an office block on this historic site, as Phase 1 of the Euston Masterplan, disregarding the assurances made by HS2 to provide replacement green space, see https://www.eustonlondon.co.uk/phase-one/. This development threatens not only the environmental balance but also community well-being in the area. Camden Council’s Euston Area Plan Update clearly demonstrates that the envisioned public green space should be on this site, yet these plans are being disregarded.
Lendlease want to start construction of the new office block in two years' time, but providing green space is a more urgent priority. Statistics show that access to green spaces in urban areas significantly improves physical and mental health, providing spaces for exercise, relaxation, and community activities. Without intervention, this lack will continue to disproportionately affect lower-income families who rely heavily on these public amenities.
Postponing replacement green space to later phases is not acceptable- it will take decades before it is built. An alternative to Lendlease's proposal is to provide high-quality public green space on the Phase 1 site, aligning with local plans and HS2’s promises. An alternative proposal could also include the provision of social housing which is urgently required. See this link for more details.
