Restore Dislike Transparency on YouTube: Give Creators Control!

Restore Dislike Transparency on YouTube: Give Creators Control!
The issue
In 2021, YouTube removed the public dislike counter, claiming it was to reduce targeted harassment against creators. However, this decision has had unintended consequences for both viewers and creators. Viewers now struggle to quickly assess the quality of content, making it harder to avoid low-effort or misleading videos. For example, when I click on a promising video, only to discover it’s just clickbait or filled with misinformation, it wastes my time and undermines my trust in the platform. Creators, on the other hand, miss out on transparent feedback that helps them improve. The lack of visible dislikes means that low-quality content can easily thrive. At the same time, genuine creators struggle to stand out, leading to frustration among millions of users who rely on YouTube for informative and engaging content.
If YouTube continues to hide dislikes, the platform risks losing credibility. Statistics show that 70% of viewers look at both likes and dislikes before engaging with content. Without this essential feedback, viewers are left in the dark, unsure of what to watch. Low-quality content thrives while genuine creators, who put time and effort into their work, become overshadowed. This not only impacts viewer experience but also affects the broader content ecosystem on YouTube. As creators feel demotivated by the lack of feedback, the platform may eventually see a decline in high-quality content, leading to a less engaging and trustworthy environment for all.
In 2023 and 2024, we've seen the rise of cringe and low-quality trends like Skibidi Toilet, Cocomelon, and other brainrot content that kids consume heavily today. Despite being repetitive and lacking educational or creative value, these videos receive millions of views. With the dislike counter hidden, parents and viewers struggle to differentiate between meaningful content and this mind-numbing flood of low-effort trends. The fact that these videos thrive unchecked highlights just how important public feedback is in helping viewers make informed choices about what they—and their children—consume.
Now is the time to act because social media is increasingly saturated with content, and tools like the dislike counter are essential for navigating it. With over 500 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, the need for viewers to quickly discern quality is more critical than ever. By signing this petition, you’re showing YouTube that it’s possible to protect creators while still allowing viewers to make informed choices. We propose a balanced solution: Give creators control over how their like and dislike counters are displayed. This could be done by offering creators three options in YouTube Studio:
- Show Likes and Dislikes
- Show Likes Only
- Hide Likes and Dislikes
This simple feature would restore transparency for viewers while still protecting creators from potential harassment. It’s a win-win for everyone, allowing creators to manage their feedback based on their comfort while giving viewers the tools to filter out misleading content. Let’s encourage YouTube to implement this feature now and restore trust in the platform!
