Restore Crescent Park’s Evening Hours!

Restore Crescent Park’s Evening Hours!
The Issue
In October 2025, Crescent Park posted signs with new hours:
6:00 AM – 7:30 PM (Standard Time)
6:00 AM – 6:30 PM (Daylight Saving Time)
This is the first time the park has set different hours for Standard and Daylight Saving Time. No explanation has been provided publicly, and inquiries for clarification have gone unanswered.
According to park security, pathway lights along the riverfront have been out for months. Instead of repairing them, it appears the city shortened the park’s hours.
New Orleans’ mild weather allows for outdoor activity year-round, and, for much of its existence, Crescent Park has been safely accessible after dark, with reliable lighting along its pathways and wharfs that allowed for continued use even during darker months. With the main pathway lights now out, that safe evening access has disappeared.
Maintenance issues should be fixed—not used to justify limiting access to public spaces that our tax dollars support!
Why This Matters
Equal Access for Working Residents
Many residents finish work around 5:00-6:00 PM, and new 6:30 PM closure effectively excludes them from weekday use. Crescent Park is funded by the public and hours should reflect the reality of community use.
Free Wellness Resource
Public outdoor recreation is one of the few free wellness resources, and limiting that access disproportionately affects lower-income, working class residents.
Evening Access Supports Mental Health and Well-Being
Time spent outdoors in a beautiful riverfront setting like Crescent Park has measurable benefits for mood, energy, and emotional well-being.
Safe, Car-Free Connection Between Neighborhoods
Crescent Park serves as a safe, scenic, and efficient pedestrian and bicycle route connecting the French Quarter, Marigny, and Bywater neighborhoods, which many rely on as it’s faster and safer than navigating traffic-heavy roads.
When the park is closed, this vital connection disappears. People are forced onto busy, bumpy, and poorly lit roads shared with cars, increasing the risk of accidents and discouraging non-vehicular travel altogether.
Mardi Gras Season Brings the City’s Highest Tourism
Mardi Gras season is New Orleans’ most active period and takes place within Daylight Savings. Crescent Park is a rare, calm space near the Quarter that provides views of the Mississippi river and the New Orleans’ skyline.
Closing it early removes a safe, scenic area for families and tourists during the city’s busiest time of year and misses a major opportunity to showcase one of New Orleans’ most beautiful public spaces.
A Call for Conversation
Beyond immediate repairs, we’re also asking to reassess Crescent Park’s closing time altogether. The community deserves a voice in setting hours that reflect real use patterns. Regular visitors feel that 7:30 PM is too early for a city known for warm evenings and vibrant public life.
