The Issue

The Greatest Neighborhood This Side of Heaven

These words are attributed to a former Boston West End resident who spoke with loving pride of his close-knit neighborhood. They are engraved on a stone embankment that dominates a small parcel of land that is evidence of an area intended to honor the West End as part of the Central Artery/Tunnel Arts Program (Big Dig) neighborhood mitigation.

Located at the intersections of Nashua Street, Martha Road and Lomasney Way, the phrase echoes back to the West End neighborhood's history and the current community's commitment to honor the past and link to the future.

The West End Civic Association (WECA) seeks to rehabilitate and restore the Greatest Neighborhood parcel to its original intent to honor the West End. Upon completion, the parcel will incorporate plantings and existing art to provide an inviting greenspace for respite and relaxation for area residents, businesses and visitors. It will be a powerful acknowledgement that our government will make good on a decades-old promise to honor the West End. It will also establish the West End as an important link in the city's greener future.

WE THE UNDERSIGNED SUPPORT THE WEST END CIVIC ASSOCIATION (WECA) IN EFFORTS TO RESTORE AND COMPLETE THE GREATEST NEIGHBORHOOD PARCEL INTO A GREENSPACE THAT HONORS THE WEST END.
