The Israeli military has dropped charges against five soldiers who were accused of sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman military prison, according to reporting by the Associated Press.

The original indictment alleged assault and sodomy with a knife, causing serious injuries. A video of the alleged incident was aired by Israeli media. A medical staffer cited in the report said the detainee was hospitalized in life-threatening condition.

These allegations are grave. Dropping charges in such a serious case raises urgent questions about accountability and transparency.

Governments engaged in armed conflict have a duty to uphold the rule of law and investigate credible allegations of abuse thoroughly and independently. Justice must apply to all — including members of the military.

We call on Israeli authorities to restore the charges or refer the case to an independent review process to ensure full accountability and public transparency.
