Restore bi-weekly recycling bin collections in Suffolk
The Issue
we've recently experienced a change in the recycling bin collection schedule, with the blue bins now being emptied every four weeks instead of every two weeks. For my family and many others in the area, this adjustment has been challenging, to say the least. Living in a family home, we generate a considerable amount of recyclable waste, and we're finding it increasingly difficult to manage it within this new schedule.
Our kitchen, the heart of our home where we cook and gather, has started to resemble a bin site rather than a clean and pleasant space. With nowhere else to store the overflow of recyclables, my kitchen is now cluttered and often unhygienic. We don't have the luxury of a front garden or additional storage space, which leaves us struggling to keep our home orderly and free from unpleasant odours.
This is not just a personal inconvenience; it's an issue that affects the broader West Suffolk community. Many residents, especially those with limited storage in flats or homes without gardens, face similar difficulties. The current four-week collection cycle does not accommodate our community's recycling needs, creating a strain on families attempting to maintain clean and sustainable living spaces.
As responsible citizens, we aim to recycle as much as possible, but the logistical barriers now make this process daunting. Overflowing bins attract pests and create unsanitary conditions that can impact public health. If maintaining hygienic living standards is a priority for our local authorities, revisiting and reversing this decision should be an imperative.
There is a simple and practical solution: revert to the previous bi-weekly collection schedule. Doing so would alleviate the undue burden currently placed on budget-constrained households and help maintain the public health standards we expect. It ensures that recycling efforts don't inadvertently sacrifice our community's well-being for administrative convenience.
or change the blue bins that are currently made practical for 2 weekly emptying, to larger blue bins that are more practical for 4 weekly emptying.
We kindly urge the County Council to listen to its constituents and act in the interest of public welfare by reinstating the bi-weekly recycling bin collection service. Please join us in signing this petition to help make our voices heard and restore practical waste management for all residents.
