The Issue

I proudly spent three out of my four high school years deeply involved in the Theatre Company at Gateway High School. It was a place where creativity thrived and where students could express themselves in profound ways. We have consistently brought pride to our school through our performances and dedication. In fact, as recently as May 8, our talented students secured two awards, showcasing the brilliance and hard work they put into their craft.

This makes it all the more devastating to receive the shocking news that the Theatre department is being cut, and dance classes are being reduced. This drastic decision is being made in favor of expanding the athletics department, which, historically, has not achieved the same level of recognition or brought home as many awards as our arts programs.

The arts are not just extracurricular activities; they are essential parts of education that foster creativity, critical thinking, and emotional expression. They offer students an opportunity to explore their talents and find their voices. Many of our students have gone on to pursue successful careers in the arts, crediting the strong foundation they received at Gateway High School.

Statistics have shown that students involved in the arts perform better academically, have higher self-esteem, and are more engaged in school activities. Cutting these programs would not only diminish the cultural and educational fabric of our school but also limit the opportunities for students to shine and excel in their chosen fields.

We urge the school administration and the school board to reconsider their decision. Let's work towards a balanced allocation of funding that appreciates the value of both athletics and the arts. Instead of eliminating or reducing our art departments, let's nurture them further so that they can continue to bring glory and recognition to our school.

Sign this petition to show your support for restoring the arts departments at Gateway High School and ensuring that future generations can enjoy the benefits and joys of a comprehensive education that includes the arts.
