Restore and Protect Al-Huda Islamic School – Tucson, Arizona

Restore and Protect Al-Huda Islamic School – Tucson, Arizona
The Issue
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
For years, Al-Huda Islamic School served the Muslim community of Tucson as more than a school.
It was a place of learning, faith, character-building, and belonging. It nurtured children spiritually, academically, and morally — shaping youth who are now adults contributing positively to society.
Since its closure in 2020, the school has remained inactive.
Today, the building stands neglected.
Windows are boarded.
Maintenance has been deferred.
Unauthorized use and visible deterioration are evident.
This is not merely a closed facility.
It is a waqf (religious endowment), and it is a community trust (amanah) left without direction.
As members of the Tucson Muslim community, we are deeply concerned by the prolonged absence of transparency, planning, and communication regarding the future of Al-Huda Islamic School.
Our Concerns
- A vital educational institution has remained closed for years with no publicly shared reopening plan.
- The physical condition of the school has visibly declined.
- The community has not received clear financial or operational reporting related to the school since its closure.
- Children and families have been left without access to an institution built specifically to serve their educational and spiritual needs.
Our Requests
We respectfully call for the following actions:
- A formal, independent assessment of the school’s physical condition and financial status, with findings shared publicly with the community.
- A clear, written plan outlining steps, timelines, and responsibilities for restoring and reopening the school, or formally determining an alternative use that serves the community.
- Transparent governance that allows meaningful community oversight and participation.
- The transfer of Al-Huda Islamic School’s management to an independent trust or board, separate from the Islamic Center of Tucson, to ensure focused leadership, accountability, and protection of the school’s founding mission.
Call to Action
By signing this petition, you are standing for:
- Transparency
- Accountability
- Responsible leadership
- The educational and spiritual future of our children
Summary
We, the undersigned members of the Muslim community of Tucson, respectfully petition for the immediate restoration and revival of Al-Huda Islamic School, a waqf (religious endowment) established for the benefit of Muslim youth and future generations.
Due to prolonged closure and lack of progress toward reopening, we respectfully request:
A formal review of the school's condition and financial management.
Immediate development of a clear restoration and reopening plan; and
That Al-Huda Islamic School be removed from Islamic Center Tucson management and placed under an independent or alternative community-based structure to ensure it fulfills its intended educational purpose.
We affirm that this petition is submitted in good faith, solely for the sake of Allah (SWT), without hidden agenda or personal gain.
We urge all community members, parents, alumni, and supporters to add their names and help restore a vital pillar of our community.
Sign the petition.
Protect the amanah.
Restore Al-Huda Islamic School.
