Let Nanaimo transportation planning staff know that they need to follow their own transit design principals and the direction given to them by their elected councilors and mayor in the fall. Respond to their survey! It's important! Why?
Nanaimo city council voted unanimously in favour of directing staff to ensure transit hubs were connected to the E&N rail corridor last fall, but the latest transit exchange project doesn’t do that. Did they miss the memo?
Nanaimo’s network design principles state that "Transit should connect to other layers of the transportation network, allowing passengers to conveniently connect to other transportation modes, including active transportation, intercity bus routes, ferry terminals, airports, rail passenger services and custom transit services."
The design for the Country Club Bus Exchange does not reflect this. The transit hub needs to be beside the E&N corridor, not a 15-minute walk away. With Light Rail Transit running on the tracks, and a multi-use trail beside it integrating with the transit exchange, the city will be in a great position to support Nanaimo’s future transportation needs.
Trying to keep all the ducks in a row along a 289km railway is no easy task, so we need to hold each and every municipality and Regional District to account for the $200 Million tax dollars that was spent buying the railway from the private companies in 2006.
Thank you for all your help bringing about the return of rail travel on Vancouver Island, standing together we will win this!
