Restore a Proper Bus Service through Muxton & Lilleshall

Restore a Proper Bus Service through Muxton & Lilleshall
Why this petition matters

Muxton and Lilleshall are villages in Shropshire, which have largely elderly populations. The largest local town with extensive Shopping,Transport and Leisure facilities is Telford. Slightly smaller but with similar links are nearby Newport and Oakengates.Oakengates is a local transport hub (buses) and has a Railway Station serving Shrewsbury Telford and Birmingham New Street. Both Muxton and Lilleshall come under the unitary authority of Telford and Wrekin Council. They also have their own supportive Parish Councils - Donnington and Muxton is one Ward and Lilleshall another. The Company providing Bus Services throughout Telford and Wrekin is Arriva . They run the only cross boundary trunk route Telford - Stafford Routes 5 and 5A. Before April 23rd 2022, Muxton and Lilleshall had a half hourly service between Telford and Stafford via Oakengates and Newport (original Route 5) which used the main ‘through’ route in Muxton. In addition Muxton enjoyed a half hourly circular service Telford - Muxton via Asda (original 5A) which connected (on its outward leg) Asda superstore and Muxton Village with its few shops Pharmacy Post Office and Doctors Surgery returning via Oakengates to Telford Town Centre.
In April Arriva decimated our connections with Telford, Oakengates, Newport and Stafford. By reducing our services to ONE bus an hour from Telford to Stafford. WITHOUT ANY CONSULTATION. Our only service now is a rerouted and extended 5A which runs Telford, Stafford with a ridiculous circular route through Muxton (to include the Pharmacy etc) by rerouting the original 5A Muxton is reduced from 4 buses an hour to/from Telford to ONE . Importantly the Asda Connection with Muxton has now been withdrawn completely! Buses are packed, because ‘mid route’ they fill up at Telford and Newport and/or Stafford passengers are being regularly turned away because of only 2 spaces for wheelchairs or Pushchairs. On a hourly service this is UNACCEPTABLE on any level. A regular occurrence in Telford Town Centre Bus Station. As is buses ‘missing’ or being taken out of Service! Two days running 3/4 August in Telford Town Centre! No Supervisors, no Travel Centre and only a Leicester phone number to contact.
As a Community we have protested locally, to our MP MARK PRITCHARD and at head office level in Leicester. Our Parish Council has requested a meeting with the General Manager JAMIE CROWSLEY he has declined to meet us!
ARRIVA’S excuses …
1. Passenger numbers are down … Arriva have no mechanism to monitor usage, in fact they agree passenger levels are up to 94% of pre Covid levels!
2. The Route is Commercial and not open to public Consultation … The Route is PARTIALLY SUBSIDISED by STAFFORD Council … Stafford - Newport
