Restore a community park in Speke, Liverpool

Nearly three decades have passed since Speke, Liverpool lost its cherished 14-acre Central Park to bulldozers, making way for a Morrisons shopping centre and a sprawling car park. A promise was made to the residents back then, stating that we would see a replacement park on the grounds of the old Central Avenue Secondary School after its demolition. Instead of greenery and community space, houses were erected, leaving the Speke community with broken promises and no park.
In a place like Speke, with nearly 15,000 residents and 4,000 children, a park isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity. Currently, families and children who seek the simple joy of playing or relaxing in a park must travel outside of Speke, leaving behind those who cannot afford the time or expense. Our community deserves better a dedicated space where children can play, families can gather, and older residents can enjoy fresh air and social interaction without the need to travel.
To further illustrate this disparity, while our canine companions have a designated space to roam at the site of the old Stapleton Avenue school, our children and families do not. This isn't just about leisure; it's about nurturing our future generations and providing them a safe place to play, learn, and flourish.
The recent allocation of £20,000,000 from the Pride in Place Fund presents a golden opportunity for us to finally reclaim what's been promised our park. By using a part of these funds to establish a community park where the old Stapleton Avenue Secondary School stood, we can transform empty promises into a vibrant reality.
Today, we urge our local government and decision-makers to honor their past promises and to invest in the heart of our community. Let's ensure the residents of Speke have their own park, a place that reflects the pride of our community and nurtures the spirit of togetherness.
