Restore Ö'omawki and Remove the Name Agassiz

The Issue

We, the Indigenous Youth, want to restore the Name Ö'omawki to what is now Colonially understood under the oppressive Name Agassiz Peak. We want to restore our kinship not only with the Peak but also our kinship with the Peoples who live with the land, the Indigenous Peoples. We do not want to honor our Ancestors and Honor our Descendants by continually acknowledging and celebrating a Eugenicist responsible for justifying and practicing genocidal sciences and acts of colonization of Indigenous Peoples, Peoples of Color, and Black and African American communities. We Acknowledge that a Name of a genocidal Eugenicist forced upon a landmark not only of the landscape but of our community in Northern Arizona is an act of dangerous ignorance and intentional discrimination.

For Over 130 years, this Name has existed to oppress and empower those who wish to carry on that legacy of Racism and Dehumanization. The Name Ö'omawki, House of Clouds, is a Hopi Observation of the ecological and cultural significance of the weather and how this Mountain, this Peak, brings people from all over the world here at her base. Ö'omawki is one of the many names that we, the indigenous, recognize as the Name of our relative because, to all of us, the minerals of herself that consume within the water we drink live within the constructs of bones. Just like that water, just like the clouds, we are strong together, we are a community, and we want to celebrate and honor that community, not celebrate and empower those who praise genocide and rejoice in the suffering of others. We want to celebrate a beautiful future, our community, and not celebrate a past of pain and suffering.
Like the storm, we ask you to join us and be a raindrop to wash away the legacies of genocide and colonization.
