We wish to draw your attention to the following Statement Of Significance, regarding the Wangaratta Railway Station, but first.

The neglected state of the stations buildings and the impending removal of its historical pedestrian footbridge and semaphore bridge, need to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

We ask that efforts are made not only to restore and maintain its buildings, but with the commencement of the ARTC station revamp, every effort be made to retain the pedestrian footbridge and semaphore bridge in their entirety, with the emphasis being on relocation of these structures within the station grounds as a static historical display.

Thus preserving history that has formed a major part of Wangaratta’s growth since its  construction was completed in 1873.

#National Trust Statement of Significance

Wangaratta Railway Station is architecturally important as an example of an 1870s standard design large station building, surviving today in close proximity with other railway buildings and engineering infrastructure including signal box and signal masts, footbridge, goods shed, crane and water tower with water column.

The complex is highly representative of nineteenth century railway operations and is important also as a major centre on the intercolonial railway to Wodonga and Sydney.

Its intact state causes it to be rare at the State level.
