Restart Renewable Projects in Alberta Immediately!

The Issue

Premier Danielle Smith abruptly paused all new renewable energy projects >1 megawatt in Alberta for 6 months under the pretext of needing natural gas backup plants in case wind and solar projects fail but even energy market economists are confused by this rationale noting that there isn’t a requirement in Alberta’s market or generators to be able to supply power 24/7. “If somebody adds solar to the grid, you don’t need to add backup to compensate for it,” said Andrew Leach, a University of Alberta energy economist. “It just adds a source of cheap electricity for times when it is sunny outside.”  Alberta’s energy market, by law, operates on free and open competition so why is this sector of the market being throttled?

As global concerns about climate change continue to grow, it is imperative that Alberta takes a proactive approach to transition towards sustainable energy sources. Renewable energy projects not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution but also provide numerous economic benefits, including job creation, local investment, and long-term energy cost stability.

The province’s plan could strand as many as 100 projects that were set to generate enough energy to power 3 million homes and are worth at least C$25 billion in investments, according to the Pembina Institute, an Alberta based energy thinkthank.

We urge the Government of Alberta to take the following actions:

Restart and Accelerate Renewable Energy Projects: We request the immediate restart of stalled or delayed renewable energy projects across the province. These projects represent an opportunity to diversify Alberta's energy mix, enhance energy security, and contribute to a cleaner environment.

Provide Incentives and Support for Renewable Energy Development: We call on the government to provide financial incentives, grants, and tax benefits for both large-scale and community-based renewable energy projects. These incentives will attract private investment, stimulate economic growth, and create new employment opportunities.

Set Ambitious Renewable Energy Targets: We urge the government to establish clear and ambitious renewable energy targets for Alberta. By setting goals for renewable energy capacity and generation, Alberta can align its energy policies with international climate commitments and position itself as a leader in sustainable energy development.

Invest in Renewable Energy Research and Innovation: It is essential to allocate resources towards research and innovation in renewable energy technologies. By supporting research institutions, startups, and innovators, Alberta can drive advancements in clean energy solutions and foster a culture of innovation.

Promote Public Awareness and Education: The government should actively promote public awareness and education campaigns about the benefits of renewable energy. A well-informed public is more likely to support and participate in renewable energy initiatives, fostering a culture of sustainability.

We, the undersigned, believe that Alberta has the potential to become a leader in renewable energy development, creating a sustainable future for generations to come. We kindly request your immediate attention to our concerns and your commitment to restarting and advancing renewable energy projects in our province.
