Responsible pet owners
The Issue
On Sunday, November 23, 2025, three dogs came into my mother’s and my backyard and viciously murdered our cat in front of my daughter and me. My whole neighborhood has been terrorized by these dogs, who have been aggressive to humans as well as animals. The owners live about a half mile from us and are known to animal control. I did call the police and animal control both and was told two things: 1. The only thing that will be done to the owners is they will receive a ticket since this isn’t the first time they’ve been warned. 2. You can sue the owners but only for the replacement cost of the animal killed because they are property. You cannot sue for emotional distress or pain and suffering. Our cat, Vincent, was irreplaceable. I know that my neighborhood is not the only one dealing with this issue and it is time for the people of Mobile to stand together against our city council and demand stronger punishments for people who continue to allow their dogs to roam freely, especially such vicious dogs who are a danger to not only other animals, but people as well. My mother and I both are still traumatized by this and do not want any other family to go through this. I could say much more about Vincent, how much we loved him and he us, but I will leave it at this: we all expect to have pets die, no one expects to have their pet murdered.
