The Issue

It is extremely important for the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) to maintain fair and accurate test results. As a dedicated student who has invested countless hours in studying for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), it is disheartening to see the outcomes of this year’s exam potentially misrepresenting the hard work and dedication put in by myself and my peers. When fairness is not upheld, students who put in significant time and effort may feel discouraged and question the value of studying hard. More importantly, it can lead students to believe that cheating is a better way to succeed.

This year, a noticeable discrepancy has been observed in the test results versus the expected performance curve. To preserve the integrity of the AIME and to ensure that all students are assessed fairly, it is crucial for the MAA to reevaluate the results of this year’s test and adjust the cut-off scores to reflect a true and accurate performance curve. The current cut-off may not accurately showcase the abilities of all students, potentially tarnishing the credibility of the assessment process.

Verifiable evidence from various educational institutions participating in AIME indicates inconsistencies with the results that do not align with historical data and anticipated outcomes. For instance, students with consistently high performance in prior stages of the competition and other mathematical contests are being unexpectedly cut off due to an unprecedented change in the score distribution.

A reevaluation could involve a detailed review of the answer distributions, comparison against last year's data, and understanding of any anomalies that may have led to this shift. Additionally, MAA should consider gathering feedback from educators and students to have a comprehensive view of this year's outcomes.

Adjusting the AIME cut-off will not only uphold the reputation and reliability of the competition but also renew the trust of students and educators in the fairness of the process. Such actions will demonstrate that MAA values the principles of equity and academic integrity.

We urge the MAA to take immediate action in reviewing and adjusting the test results to ensure that every student's hard work and dedication is justly recognized. Please sign this petition to support fairness and integrity in educational assessments.
