Petition: Stop the Use of the Name of Jesus as Profanity in Film, Television and Social Media

To: Writers, Producers, and Creators of Television Shows, Motion Pictures and Social Media.

We, the undersigned, respectfully urge all writers, producers, and creatives in the entertainment industry to cease the casual misuse of the name of Jesus Christ in film, television and on social media. The practice of using the name of Jesus as an expletive or expression of frustration is deeply offensive, blasphemous, and shows a lack of reverence for one of the most sacred figures in human history.

To Christians, the name of Jesus represents forgiveness, hope, salvation, mercy, and divine love. The careless invocation of His name in scripts meant to provoke emotion or imitate realism is not only disrespectful—it is a direct violation of one of the Ten Commandments: Exodus 20:7 (NLT)

“You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.”

This is not merely a religious grievance; it is a call for basic cultural respect. Imagine the reverse. Ask yourself:

When was the last time you heard the name of Muhammad ﷺ (sallallahu ʿalayhi wa sallam) used in a disrespectful or blasphemous way on television or in movies?

When have you ever heard the name of Allah ﷻ (Subḥānahu wa taʿālā) used in vain or as a throwaway line in a drama or sitcom?

You haven’t. And rightly so.

The global creative community, including Hollywood and broadcasters worldwide, has shown consistent and commendable respect for Islamic faith and tradition. This is not censorship—it is cultural sensitivity. It is an acknowledgment of the sacredness of what billions of people hold dear.

So why is the Christian faith treated with less care?

We are not calling for creative restriction or the banning of religious content—we are calling for equal reverence. If writers can craft meaningful, emotionally powerful dialogue without offending Muslims, then they can certainly do the same for Christians.

We remember that in 1939, David O. Selznick was fined $5,000 (worth over $113,000 in 2025) by the Motion Picture Association for including the word “damn” in Gone With the Wind. At that time, even mild profanity had limits. Today, however, the most sacred name in Christianity can be used flippantly, with no thought for the faithful who hear it.

Even more troubling is the effect this has on our children and families.
As media continues to normalize the misuse of Jesus’ name, young people are growing up thinking it’s acceptable—even fashionable—to blaspheme. They hear it so often in movies, TV shows, and online content that they become desensitized, no longer understanding that this is sacred. What once would have caused shock now barely raises an eyebrow.

This is how cultural decay begins—not with hatred, but with indifference.

There are countless alternative expressions writers can use that convey emotion without undermining what others hold holy:

To those of you shaping modern storytelling: please show the same care toward Jesus Christ that you already show to other revered religious figures.

This is not about silencing artistic voices—it’s about lifting the standard of how we treat what is sacred. Let’s move forward with compassion, reverence, and respect for all faith traditions.

A Final Word to the Faithful

If you’re reading this and wondering whether your voice makes a difference—it does.

Your signature is more than a name on a page. It’s a statement of faith, of love, and of a desire for a world where reverence is not mocked but honoured. It says to writers and producers:

“You can still tell powerful stories—without disrespecting our Saviour.”

History shows that when people of faith unite and speak up—change follows.

So please, sign this petition. Share it. Stand with us. Let us teach our children by example that what is holy must be treated as such.

With faith and hope,

Mr Christopher Harris
