Respect Religious Freedom in Examination Centres – Demand a Fair Inquiry into the Nalbari
Respect Religious Freedom in Examination Centres – Demand a Fair Inquiry into the Nalbari
The Issue
The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam
The Education Department, Government of Assam
The National Testing Agency (NTA)
The District Administration, Nalbari
Petition
We, the undersigned citizens, express our deep concern regarding the reported incident at a NEET examination centre in Nalbari, where a Brahmin student was allegedly compelled to remove his sacred thread (Yajnopavita/Janeu) before appearing for the examination.
The sacred thread is a revered religious symbol worn by Brahmins after the Upanayana ceremony and forms an integral part of their religious identity and faith. Reports indicate that any metallic object attached to the thread had already been removed prior to the examination. Therefore, the circumstances under which the student was allegedly asked to remove the sacred thread itself deserve immediate clarification and investigation.
Examinations are critical moments in a student's life. Any action that may cause emotional distress, affect mental well-being, or interfere with an individual's religious beliefs should be addressed with utmost sensitivity and fairness.
This petition is not directed against any particular individual, community, or institution. Rather, it seeks to uphold the constitutional values of religious freedom, dignity, equality, and respect for all faiths.
We Demand
An immediate, impartial, and transparent inquiry into the incident.
Public disclosure of the findings of the investigation.
Appropriate action against any individual found responsible for violating established rules or constitutional rights.
Clear guidelines for all examination centres to ensure that religious symbols and practices are respected while maintaining security protocols.
Measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Our Appeal
India's strength lies in its diversity and mutual respect. Every student, irrespective of religion, caste, language, or background, deserves to appear for examinations in an environment that respects their dignity and constitutional rights.
We urge the concerned authorities to act promptly and ensure justice, transparency, and respect for religious freedom.
