On the 5th of March I had the meeting with 2 chief veterinary scientists representing DIRECAO GERAL DE ALIMENTACAO VETERENARIA (DGAV). This is the Portuguese equivalent organisation to the Australian Biosecurity department, and discussed (a) the problem, (b) where they can assist and (c) possible solutions.
They stated that Australia’s biosecurity restrictions across most edible items which are imported are the strictest in the world.
They will speak with colleagues in the scientific community to establish if any new assessments of the virus risk in sardines is still present or if any new risk mitigation measures have been implemented that will comply with Australian requirements.
I have provided the documentation supplied to me by BICOM on the 3rd of March (email) with instructions for countries making submissions for reviews.
The team from Portugal stated it is a very long process both on the Portuguese side and the Australian side, however they will provide a progress update within the next month.

No dia 5 de Março tive uma reunião com dois cientistas veterinários chefes representando a DIREÇÃO GERAL DE ALIMENTAÇÃO VETERINÁRIA (DGAV) a organisacao equivalente ao Australian Department of Biosecurity, e discutimos (a) o problema, (b) onde eles podem ajudar e (c) possíveis soluções.
Eles afirmaram que as restrições de biossegurança da Austrália para a maioria dos itens comestíveis importados são as mais rigorosas do mundo.
Eles conversarão com colegas da comunidade científica para verificar se ainda há alguma nova avaliação do risco de vírus em sardinhas ou se alguma nova medida de mitigação de risco foi implementada que esteja em conformidade com os requisitos australianos.
Forneci a documentação que me foi enviada pelo BICOM em 3 de março (por e-mail) com instruções para os países que desejam fazer revisões.
A equipe de Portugal afirmou que é um processo muito longo, tanto por parte de Portugal quanto da Austrália, mas que fornecerá uma atualização sobre o andamento no próximo mês.
