Don't destroy nature for urbanization
The Issue
The town of New Tecumseth will meet on Thursday, November 26th 2020 at 7pm to decide on an approval for the sale of natural land in Tottenham. The plan for this land is for it to become industrialized; which includes new homes to be built across from the conservation area in Tottenham. While this land is not technically apart of the conservation area, it is full of natural land that is inhabited by wildlife. It has trees, grasslands as well as a creek that runs through it. While not well maintained, there are many animals that call this land home. Once natural land is destroyed, it cannot be reversed.
This land is currently owned by Totten Investment Inc. who would sell part of this land to a developer and part of it would be zoned for residential.
We should consider that nearby nature trails such as the Gibson trail and Beattie Pinery in Alliston are highly popular among New Tecumseth residents and always crowded with people enjoying the outdoors, and there is science behind why that is. Humans need access to nature just as much as their animal counterparts. We need it physically, to help curb the effects of global warming, but also mentally. We should be building more access to nature in our communities; not destroying it for subdivisions and industry. We need to think about how the building of more houses and loss of nature impacts the environment, and negatively impacts many living things.
Many people moved to Tottenham for the small town experience, and to be able to appreciate the outdoors and nature. Please think about how this decision would affect everyone - young families , animal's habitat and our already-degrading environment.
For once, let's think long term instead of short term. Think about the environment instead of money. Make a decision that would make our grandchildren proud. Don't destroy what little nature we have left for more pavement and urbanization.
