Thanks for all the support so far, from both fellow floater sufferers and other members of the public alike!
My personal update is that I may be undergoing right eye vitrectomy at some point this year, to remove my floaters, as they have gotten worse over the course of the last 2 years, and it is more and more difficult to get through the day. Vitrectomy carries significant risks to sight, and it is a major operation used in retinal surgery as often as the last resort for eye diseases. It will almost certainly accelerate cataract formation and perhaps cause other issues. That is a risk I understand I need to take. I would prefer to live some years with vision I can use for work, sport and enjoying the world, than regret not doing it decades later, having lived a life of diminished quality.
In the span of the last 2 years, which has seemed like one long nightmarish day, I have consulted numerous ophthalmologists, and all but one will not consider a vitrectomy. I have also seen psychologists and psychiatrists, none of whom have been of any help, despite spending quite a bit of time and money on that approach.
I feel that delaying vitrectomy has cost me 2 years of my life. In addition, there is virtually no support available for this condition, other than to treat it as a psychosomatic issue or some other psychological issue, and to learn strategies to 'get over it'. In my opinion, the reluctance of my psychologists and psychiatrists to accept this condition as a real medical issue has caused even further distress and resulted in the inability to progress with therapy in any meaningful manner.
All that said, I am extremely thankful there is a retina specialist willing to go ahead with the operation, who is out of state but not too far.
This petition will remain open to continue to rally for awareness on this underappreciated medical condition.
