Alpine Resorts Victoria has for the 2026 season imposed  a gate entry fee at Mt Buller on children in Mansfield Shire participating in school programs and has discontinued free entry for seniors over the age of 65. This decision is not merely inconvenient but also unjust, considering the potential impact it could have on the local community's engagement with outdoor and recreational activities.

Historically, these waivers facilitated accessible education and recreation for students and provided senior residents opportunities to maintain an active lifestyle without financial burdens. By imposing these fees, we risk marginalizing segments of our community who benefit substantially from these concessions.

According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, nearly 18% of the population in Mansfield are aged over 65, and about 20% of local families fall under the low-income category. Adding financial strain by introducing these fees could deter participation in valuable recreational and educational programs, ultimately affecting community well-being and cohesion.
