Rescind Executive Order 14183 and Restore Transgender Americans’ Right to Serve
The Issue
Growing up, I always believed that being strong meant fighting for what you believe in with unwavering determination. Watching family members serve contributed significantly to this belief. So, when I realized that my gender identity might someday prevent me from serving, my heart broke. The exclusion of transgender individuals from the military undermines the very principles of equality and justice that many have fought tirelessly to defend.
The military is an institution built on the foundations of sacrifice, dedication, and a commitment to safeguarding freedoms. Excluding transgender individuals undermines these principles and denies dedicated, courageous people their right to serve and protect their country. It's crucial to recognize that strength and valor aren't inhibited by gender identity. Recent studies by the National Center for Transgender Equality have shown no negative impacts on military readiness or cohesion from having transgender servicemembers.
Moreover, according to research conducted by the RAND Corporation, the financial costs associated with inclusive policies are minimal, amounting to less than 0.1% of the military's active healthcare expenditures. Their research further indicates that roughly 4,000 transgender personnel are actively serving without incident, ably performing their duties and contributing to the military's diverse skill set and resilience.
It's also essential to acknowledge that transgender people, like their cisgender counterparts, are patriotically motivated and willing to pay the ultimate price to safeguard our nation. They undergo rigorous training and practice immense discipline, making them assets to our armed forces rather than liabilities.
Trump’s executive order 14183, excluding transgender people from the right to serve is not just discriminatory—it's a terrible misuse of talent, commitment, and potential. For a nation that prides itself on liberty and justice for all, these values must reflect in every realm, including the military.
I urge you to stand with me in calling for a military policy that reflects the diversity and spirit of our nation. Let us restore the right of transgender individuals to serve openly and with honor. Please sign this petition to support a more inclusive, fair, and equitable military for everyone ready and willing to serve.
