The Issue
For the past year and a half, I have had the privilege of playing golf—a sport that has become so much more than just a hobby. It's a means for me to enjoy the great outdoors with my friends, disconnect from screens, and truly be myself. Golf is where I express my thoughts, share jokes, and feel at ease with my friends. However, a recent change in rules threatens to complicate and diminish these experiences.
In Miami, the organization "Youth on Course" has been offering young golfers like myself an invaluable opportunity to play golf at lower rates. The core idea was to engage young players in the sport, giving us the freedom to explore and develop our passion for golf without the constraints that often come with adult sports. But starting May 26, in “Crandon Golf Course” a new rule demands that a supervising adult accompany us when we play. This is unfair because it takes away a player’s spot, and many of us do not have the luxury of always having an adult available to come supervise.
This new requirement is not only unmotivating but also imposes logistical barriers. It discourages us from playing because choosing a date isn’t only about our availability but also that of an adult. Many of us may have to miss out on playing, or worse, lose interest in this beautiful sport. This rule undermines the very mission of Youth on Course, which is to make golf accessible and enjoyable for young golfers in Miami.
I urge the decision-makers at Youth on Course and at Crandon Golf to reconsider this rule. Please focus on empowering young golfers to enjoy and embrace the sport freely and independently. By rescinding this requirement, the organization can continue fostering a love for golf among Miami's youth, ensuring the sport remains accessible and motivating.
Please join me in signing this petition to urge Youth on Course to drop the new adult supervision requirement starting May 26. Let's keep golf a welcoming and free space for all young aspiring golfers!
