Reschedule the California Governor Debate With Fair, Inclusive Criteria

The Issue

A major California gubernatorial debate was canceled after backlash over criteria that excluded every candidate of color.

The debate, co-sponsored by USC and KABC, used polling and fundraising thresholds that resulted in only white candidates qualifying—despite a diverse field that includes several prominent candidates of color. The decision sparked widespread criticism and ultimately led to the event being called off just hours before it was set to begin.

This outcome serves no one. Not the candidates, and especially not the voters.

Californians deserve the chance to hear directly from a full range of candidates seeking to lead the state. Debates are a critical part of the democratic process, giving voters the information they need to make informed decisions. When participation rules exclude entire groups of candidates, it raises serious concerns about fairness and representation.

Canceling the debate altogether only makes the problem worse.

We are calling on USC, KABC, and future debate organizers to immediately reschedule this debate using fair, transparent, and inclusive criteria that allow a broader group of qualified candidates to participate.

This is not about political parties or individual candidates. It’s about ensuring that California voters have access to open, representative, and meaningful discussions about the state’s future.

A fair debate should reflect the diversity of both the candidates and the people of California.

Voters should not be left in the dark because of flawed rules or canceled events. California needs this debate—and it needs to happen soon.

If you believe voters deserve a fair, inclusive, and timely gubernatorial debate, add your name today.
