W.A.T.E.R. Project Update – Progress Being Made

Work continues with Wessex Water to address the long-standing issue of untreated sewage surcharging at the two affected locations in Brister End and Brierly Hay.

Following a number of questions and concerns I raised on behalf of our community, Wessex Water has been carrying out further investigations into the local sewer infrastructure. I am pleased to report that discussions have been positive and significant progress is being made. I will continue working closely with Wessex Water and other stakeholders to help bring an end to these unacceptable incidents.

I have been advised that new sewer improvement works are expected to commence later this year, with August currently being suggested as the start date. The works are planned in and around Yetminster, Leigh and Chetnole and will involve relining sections of the sewer network. Full details will be published by Wessex Water once dates confirmed. 

These improvements will help reduce groundwater infiltration into the sewer system, improving its performance and extending the lifespan of existing infrastructure. While this work alone will not completely eliminate sewage discharges into the River Wriggle, it represents an important and positive step forward in addressing the wider problem in our community. 

At the same time, we continue to develop long-term solutions through W.A.T.E.R. (Wriggle Action Towards Environmental Resilience), focusing on reducing the amount of clean rainwater entering the sewer network and improving the resilience of our local environment.

To move forward as a fully community-led organisation, we urgently need volunteers to fill the roles of Secretary and Treasurer. Once these positions are filled, the group can formally adopt its constitution, open a community bank account, apply for grants and funding, and deliver larger projects that will benefit the whole Wriggle Valley.

This is an opportunity for local residents to help shape the future of our community and environment.
