Walls, Mississippi is a small, majority-Black town of about 1,400 people, and officials there are weighing whether to rezone more than 1,000 acres from agricultural to light-industrial use. Rep. Dan Eubanks, who represents Walls, wrote that the town is "wanting to put another massive data center right in our back yard," according to a social media post reported by Mississippi Today. Residents who have visited Southaven describe living for over a year with the constant noise these facilities generate, and they worry Walls could face the same fate almost overnight.

The timing raises its own questions. The town approved a comprehensive zoning plan only months ago, and residents want to know why a rezoning this large is suddenly necessary and what, exactly, it is meant to attract. A planning commission meeting on the proposal had to be moved to Walls Elementary School because so many residents planned to attend.

Longtime resident Emily Harris put it simply: "We are not against progress. Growth is a wonderful thing if we do it smart," according to Mississippi Today. Families who chose Walls for its quiet, rural character deserve real answers and a real say before more than 1,000 acres of their community changes for good.
