Require UK councils to exempt Blue Badge drivers from fines in some roads.

Require UK councils to exempt Blue Badge drivers from fines in some roads.
The Issue
I am 76 years old and my husband is 81 and disabled; visiting family or friends has become almost impossible without facing the fear of receiving a parking fine in some roads that are for residents only. For someone like my husband and myself, who struggle to walk long distances due to medical reasons, finding a nearby parking spot should not come with the burden of costly penalties. It is vital for individuals with mobility challenges to have their needs met by our local councils.
The Blue Badge Scheme was introduced to ensure equitable access to essential services, social opportunities and community involvement for individuals with mobility impairments. Yet, the introduction of residents-only parking fines for Blue Badge drivers across various councils in the UK is undermining these very rights, curtailing the independence and freedom of vulnerable groups.
Statistics show that there are over 2.3 million Blue Badge holders in the UK, many of whom depend on their vehicles to fulfill daily activities that most take for granted. Penalising these individuals for simply trying to access their community is not only unjust but discriminatory.
Furthermore, research has highlighted a significant correlation between social isolation and mental health, especially among the elderly and disabled communities. By restricting their movement with fear of fines, we are inadvertently promoting a greater risk of depression, anxiety and other health issues. These fines are not just monetary penalties but barriers to essential human connections and full participation in society.
Councils have the authority to exempt Blue Badge holders from being fined when going down residents-only streets for visits, thereby providing a simple yet effective solution to enhance their quality of life. This change would respect and uphold the rights of disabled individuals, while also promoting inclusivity and fairness.
I urge the UK government and local councils to consider the significant impact such fines have on Blue Badge drivers' lives and to work towards implementing a nationwide exemption policy. Let us ensure that those who face mobility challenges are given the respect, freedom and accessibility they deserve without punitive measures. This also applies to their carers/ family members who have to keep an eye on them if they live in such roads as it is making it impossible for them to drop in and check on their loved ones without an £80/£160 tickets being issued.
Please sign this petition to support this cause and help bring about much-needed change for the Blue Badge community across the UK.
