As members of the community who have carried the highest tax burden for years, we are deeply outraged and feel personally betrayed by the recent reports detailing Commons Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle's extravagant overseas spending using taxpayers' money. Over £250,000 of our hard-earned cash has reportedly been spent on lavish trips, including £21,000 for flights and a baffling £500 for an 'extra suitcase'.

Amidst these demonstrations of unchecked spending, our government has ceased the winter fuel allowance, leaving many families struggling to stay afloat. The juxtaposition between these excessive expenses and the austerity measures affecting ordinary citizens is both maddening and heartbreaking.

While we understand the duties of the Speaker can require overseas travel, we demand that Sir Lindsay Hoyle and future Speakers adhere to a strict expenses budget that prioritizes necessary spending over unjustifiable luxuries. Transparency and accountability for public funds must be our government's top priority, in order to ensure judicious use of citizens’ contributions and establish public trust.

We the public demand that Sir Lindsay Hoyle provides a complete account of his spending and that a thorough review and reform of Commons Speaker's expenses occur, to prevent such misuse of taxpayers' money in the future.
