Our Voices Must Be Heard 
I recently discovered with great concern that the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) passed an anti-Israel resolution with 58% of the delegate vote, planning to include it in next month's agenda. This decision does not reflect the views of the entire membership, and it signifies an alarming trend within our union: an inclination towards issues that not only go beyond the core mission of our union but also risk dividing us.

UFT's Core Mission 
The UFT was established to support its members—teachers, paraprofessionals, and school-related personnel—by ensuring fair working conditions, adequate resources, and quality education for all students. It is crucial that we stay focused on these goals rather than being sidetracked by political resolutions that do not serve our foundational purpose.

Silencing Member Voices 
The recent vote illustrates a systemic issue: the delegates representing us are out of touch with the broader membership's priorities. Many members, including myself, were unaware of this vote and have had concerns about how our voices are being silenced or misrepresented. Our union should be a platform for unity, not division, and should avoid controversial resolutions that polarize.

We propose a motion to require the UFT to prioritize any resolution or vote that directly impacts the day-to-day lives and professional conditions of its members over peripheral political agendas. This involves conducting thorough surveys to genuinely capture the pulse of the membership before carrying resolutions of such sensitivity. Greater transparency and communication with members before such votes will ensure true representation.
