I have witnessed daily the increasing number of minors riding e-bikes recklessly on our streets, especially in Irvine. It concerns me deeply, as I have seen how unfamiliarity with traffic rules leads to dangerous situations, both for these young riders and for drivers around them. Allowing minors unrestricted access to e-bikes without adequate understanding of road rules or responsibility poses a serious risk.

Moreover, an alarming number of incidents are being reported where minors are involved in assaults and hate crimes while using e-bikes, further exacerbating community tensions. This reckless behavior stems not only from a lack of accountability but from a lack of guidance and structure that a minimum age requirement could impose.

California and its cities like Irvine must step up to mitigate these dangers. By setting a minimum age for e-bike usage, authorities can ensure that those who ride are well-informed and capable of handling the responsibility. Introducing mandatory safety training sessions could also be extremely beneficial, equipping young riders with the necessary knowledge to navigate our roads safely.

Other regions and countries have successfully implemented similar regulations with positive outcomes. For instance, numerous European countries have age restrictions on electric bikes that have reduced traffic incidents and improved overall safety.

The objective here is not to limit the freedom of our youth but to enhance their safety and the security of our community. As e-bikes continue to rise in popularity, we must adapt our safety measures accordingly.
