Require the Royal Family to Pay Taxes Like the Rest of the UK
The Issue
In the wake of the autumn budget, the British public is shouldering the second highest tax burden in decades. Yet one group seems unaffected - the Royal family.
Billions are paid by hardworking individuals and small businesses, yet the Royals, some of the wealthiest individuals in our country, are not subjected to the same obligations. This begs the question- is that fair? LSE's May 2021 report highlights the vast wealth disparity that continues to grow in our country due, in part, to such systemic privileges.
Though the Crown Estate returns its profits to the Treasury, the personal wealth of the King and the immediate royal family, estimated to be about £400 million based on a 2020 Forbes report, is tax-exempt (now around £600 million according to a recent Channel 4 report. This can create significant inequality and the perception that those at the top aren't shouldering their share of the responsibility.
We, the tax-paying citizens of the UK, are asking for a debate in government regarding the Royal family's tax exemptions. We call for equal tax obligations for everyone, no matter their societal status or wealth.
Help us build a fairer Britain, where wealth doesn't exempt you from our shared civic duty. Sign this petition for equality in taxation and fairness for all citizens.
