For over two years, my family and our neighbours have been trapped in a nightmare. The Northern Territory (NT) Department of Housing's inaction on problem tenancies is causing a wave of unsafe and antisocial behaviour throughout our communities, and it's high time for change. Our once peaceful neighbourhoods have been shattered, with incidents of vandalism, noise disturbances, and aggressive behaviour becoming an almost daily occurrence. The situation has reached a point where residents feel unsafe in their own homes, and this is utterly unacceptable.

The NT Government has a responsibility to ensure that all its citizens can live in safe and secure environments. However, the failure to effectively manage problematic tenancies has left many feeling abandoned and helpless. Families like mine, who only wish to live peacefully, are suffering due to the lack of stringent enforcement and proactive measures from the housing authorities.

Action must be taken now to implement effective strategies for managing problem tenancies. This includes:

1. Increasing resources and training for housing officers to swiftly and effectively handle complaints and reports of antisocial behaviour.
2. Collaborating with local law enforcement to monitor and address repeat offenders promptly.
3. Developing clear guidelines and a transparent process for evicting tenants who continue to disrupt community peace after repeated warnings.
4. Providing support and resources for tenants to encourage better community integration and behaviour, focusing on those who may need additional assistance to comply with tenancy agreements.

We call on the NT Department of Housing to listen to the pleas of their community members and to take immediate and decisive action to protect the wellbeing of all residents. The time for excuses has passed; now is the time for resolve and action.
