The issue

The Australian and United Kingdom Government's have enforced an under 16's ban on Social Media that somehow also affects video games. Sony and Microsoft allow for Drivers License, Passport and Selfie ID verification, Valve's platform Steam only allows for verification via a Credit Card (something very few people in Australia own).

Not having a credit card shouldn't stop you from purchasing R18+ rated games, such as Left 4 Dead 2 and Cyberpunk 2077, on Steam. Sony and Microsoft have shown there are more inclusive ways to verify age, so why isn't the largest gaming platform in the world, Steam, allowing them?

Note: A Credit Card in Australia is a $5 a minimum per-month spend, which means if you only have that Credit Card for Steam you are essentially paying a $5 a month subscription to access 18+ games on Steam and opening yourself to Credit Card fraud (something 2.3 million Australian's experienced in 2025).

We call upon Valve to broaden their age verification methods. By adopting at least one the aforementioned alternative verification methods Valve showcase a commitment to accessibility, helping prevent unnecessary obstacles to games like Cyberpunk 2077, Grand Theft Auto V, The Witcher 3, DOOM Eternal, Left 4 Dead 2 and Dead Island 2.

Sign this petition to urge Steam to allow alternative age verification methods, so gamers over the age of 18 in Australia and the United Kingdom can continue to enjoy the ability to purchase and play Steam games.
