The Issue

My heart is in my throat every time my non-verbal, autistic son ventures near water. Like many children on the autism spectrum, my son is irresistibly drawn to water, yet he cannot swim or understand basic swimming instructions. Adding to the fear is the sobering statistic that children with autism are 160% more likely to die from drowning compared to their neurotypical peers. This isn’t just a statistical concern for me—it's a daily fear I live with, and I know I am not alone in this.

Drowning is a leading cause of death for children with autism, yet accessible swimming lessons tailored specifically for special needs children remain woefully inadequate. Across the United Kingdom, there is a glaring shortage of programs and qualified swimming instructors experienced in teaching children with special educational needs (SEN). This lack of resources leaves families like mine in an unimaginably vulnerable position where joyous play quickly turns into anxiety over safety.

Children with autism require a different teaching approach—one that is patient, repetitive, and, above all, empathetic to their needs. This specialized instruction can be life-saving, imparting not only swimming skills but vital survival techniques. Yet, there aren’t nearly enough instructors trained to offer this essential guidance.

We urge local councils and educational bodies to collaborate in creating more inclusive swimming programs. By investing in training more swimming instructors specifically in SEN methodologies, we can ensure that every child, regardless of their neurological makeup, has access to swimming lessons tailored to their needs. Funding needs to be allocated towards establishing SEN-focused swimming classes in every community pool, making them standard, not the exception.

If we work together, we can provide autistic children like my son, and many others, a chance to safely explore the joys of swimming while equipping them with skills that could one day save their lives. Please sign this petition to demand local councils prioritize the training and hiring of more SEN-specialized swimming instructors. Together, we can make a ripple effect of change that begins at the poolside, safeguarding our most vulnerable children.

Please sign our petition and help us secure a safer future for all children with autism.
