Require schools to act on online bullying impacting pupils

Require schools to act on online bullying impacting pupils
The Issue
My child, who is autistic, has faced unimaginable distress due to online bullying and serious threats from classmates. Despite providing clear evidence, the school failed to take adequate action, treating the situation as trivial rather than a serious safeguarding concern. The hurt and fear my child experienced were not only heartbreaking but preventable.
In today's digital age, the lines between online and physical realities are increasingly blurred, impacting children's well-being within the school environment. Statistics reveal that a significant portion of students who experience cyberbullying also face similar issues at school, leading to detrimental effects on their mental health and academic performance. Schools hold a duty of care to protect students beyond the physical campus, especially when online bullying has direct repercussions in the school setting.
For children with additional needs, like my own, the vulnerability is even greater. Cognitive and emotional differences can exacerbate the impact of bullying, making institutional support and protective measures even more critical.
This petition calls for a mandatory policy requiring schools to take responsibility and implement action plans when online bullying and threats affect their students. These actions should include thorough investigations, appropriate disciplinary procedures, and comprehensive support for victims. Training should be provided for staff to recognizably and effectively manage such issues promptly.
Implementation of these measures will promote a safer, more inclusive environment for all children, ensuring that every pupil, regardless of their personal challenges, has access to a supportive educational experience.
I urge you to sign this petition to advocate for policy changes that protect children and hold schools accountable in creating a safe and nurturing learning atmosphere. Change starts with each action we take to ensure that every child feels secure at school, both online and offline.
