Require Rent Control Caps in All States

Require Rent Control Caps in All States
The Issue
I recently received a mere 2.3% increase in my disability benefits this year, yet my rent has risen by a staggering 14%, equating to an additional $100 each month. This is not an isolated occurrence; for the past three years, my rent has consistently increased by $100 annually. At this rate, my fiancé and I face the terrifying prospect of homelessness within the next couple of years. We are just some of the many individuals caught in the relentless cycle of skyrocketing rent costs and insufficient cost-of-living adjustments.
Currently, only two states, Oregon and California, have enacted statewide rent control caps to protect tenants from exorbitant rent increases. This leaves the vast majority of tenants across the country vulnerable to significant and unpredictable spikes in their rental costs. Such unchecked increases threaten the stability of individuals and families, pushing many towards a precarious existence or even homelessness.
The cost of living adjustments for individuals on disability are minimal, making it nearly impossible for them to keep pace with these overwhelming rent hikes. Allowing rent increases to be solely based on these adjustments would provide a fairer and more sustainable solution for many vulnerable citizens who rely on fixed incomes.
Every state needs to recognize the detrimental impact that unchecked rent increases have on their communities. The housing market should not be a constant source of fear and insecurity, but rather a stable foundation upon which individuals and families can build their lives.
We call upon lawmakers across the United States to implement rent control caps, ensuring that rent increases align more closely with cost of living adjustments. This necessary reform will prevent good people from being forced onto the streets and help restore community stability.
Sign this petition to urge our state governments to adopt essential measures to protect tenants, foster equitable housing conditions, and promote a society where everyone has access to affordable and secure housing. Together, we can make a difference.
