Driving through the neighborhood, it's frustrating to hear people blame residents for the visible trash and debris, without understanding the deeper issue at play. This is environmental racism—it's in the infrastructure. In wealthier neighborhoods, there are public trash cans everywhere, and waste companies make regular pickups without fail. Now take a look at marginalized areas; scarce trash cans, bins without lids or wheels, and services that might not show up for weeks.

The reality is that Waste Management does not provide consistent service in these areas. Residents are left with overflowing bins, and even when trash is put out correctly, it’s often ignored. Many people in these communities struggle to afford regular trash collection, leading to additional fees just to maintain basic sanitation. Stray animals then get into the overflowing garbage, creating an even bigger mess. In wealthier areas, if trash spills, someone takes care to pick it up. Why should it be different elsewhere?
