Require public input on Mosques in Midland, Texas
The Issue
Our Constitution is founded on Judeo-Christian values, which have deeply influenced the fabric of our nation and our community here in Midland, Texas. As concerned citizens, we believe that Islam, with its distinct values and legal traditions, is not entirely compatible with these foundational principles. Our worry lies not in the freedom to practice religion—a right we uphold and respect—but in the potential introduction and embedding of Sharia law into our systems.
The heart of our concern is not with the establishment of Mosques as religious places, but rather with the socio-political implications that could arise without adequate public discourse. Midland is a unique community with its own character, traditions, and ways of living. It’s crucial that the voices of its citizens are heard and considered in any significant cultural development, ensuring that changes or new introductions reflect and respect our collective identity.
Around the country, there have been discussions and debates surrounding how Islamic principles interact with American values. In some cases, communities faced challenges integrating these different systems without causing division or misunderstanding. It's essential that Midland has an open, transparent dialogue to preempt potential issues and navigate this together harmoniously. Fostering such dialogue will ensure peace, mutual respect, and understanding.
We propose that the city of Midland implement a mandatory public consultation process before any new religious institutions, including Mosques, are established. This process would include public forums, detailed proposals from community leaders, and involvement from all citizens who wish to participate. Such a measure will allow us a collective space to voice our views, concerns, and hopes for the future of our community without prejudicing against any individual or group.
By enforcing a requirement for public input and discussion, we can work toward a future where all residents feel secure and valued, maintaining Midland’s longstanding commitment to unity and transparency.
Sign this petition if you believe in the importance of public consultation and preserving the values that define our community. Let us make our voices heard and work towards a decision that encompasses all perspectives while safeguarding the rights and wishes of every citizen of Midland.
