Petition updateRequire Prior Notification for Aerial and Ground Pesticide Application

New WHO Cancer Report Highlights Urgent Need for Pesticide Protections in Our Community

Btw, a new World Health Organization report warns that one in five people will develop cancer, and the disease will affect/touch 92% of people globally...either through their own diagnosis or that of a close family member. This sobering statistic hits close to home, especially after my recent experience breathing in Eluvium fungicide (containing chlorothalonil) from crop dusters while out for a midday Sunday walk in Virginia.

Probably just "crazy" of me to assume that cancer rates are so high because the food we eat might be laced with carcinogens...simply "rinsing them off" probably won't 'work' given that they are embedded within the plant itself from a "young age".

No prior warning, no notifications...just unexpected aerial application drifting into public spaces.   Ever since the incident, I have developed strange symptoms like screeching tinnitus to the point of not being able to sleep for weeks.   Strangely enough, going away to Maryland for a few days made it go away temporarily.   Now that I've returned, it has also returned.  Other residents in the shared household also report similar experiences with sudden onset Tinnitus.

Why this matters right now: Aerial and ground pesticide applications, including fungicides like Eluvium, can drift far beyond target fields, exposing unsuspecting residents, walkers, children, and families without any heads-up.   In many areas, there are minimal or no requirements for public notification before spraying, unlike some places with basic courtesies.

Reentry periods add to the concern:  Pesticide labels specify Restricted Entry Intervals (REIs)....time periods (often 12 to 72+ hours, sometimes longer depending on the product, crop, and activity) during which people should avoid treated areas to minimize exposure to residues. Different substances have different REIs based on toxicity. Without knowing what was sprayed (or when), we can’t make informed decisions to stay away, protect kids, or adjust plans. To make matters worse, many of these pesticides are volatile...they continue to linger and off-gas into the air for days or even weeks after application, especially in warm conditions, creating ongoing inhalation risks far beyond the initial spray.  Health risks of un-notified ground or aerial pesticide exposure (respiratory irritation, skin/eye issues, potential cancer links, neurological effects, etc.) remain serious, as detailed previously throughout the petition.

Key health risks of exposure to ground or aerially applied pesticides (without prior warning):

Respiratory irritation and damage: Inhalation can cause coughing, tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, throat/lung irritation, and nosebleeds. Chlorothalonil (in Eluvium) is particularly noted for high inhalation toxicity.
Skin and eye irritation: Rashes, burning, allergic reactions, and severe eye irritation.
Longer-term/chronic risks: Linked to increased cancer risk (chlorothalonil classified as a likely human carcinogen by some assessments), potential endocrine disruption, neurological effects, reproductive issues, and weakened immune response. Broader pesticide exposure is associated with various cancers, asthma, Parkinson's, and more.
Vulnerable groups: Children, elderly, pregnant people, and those with pre-existing conditions face higher risks due to higher breathing rates, developing bodies, or sensitivities. Drift can contaminate air, water, and nearby properties unpredictably.

Specific health risks of unnotified exposure to ground or aerially applied pesticides/fungicides (like chlorothalonil):

Acute/short-term effects from inhalation or drift: Severe respiratory irritation (coughing, throat/lung tightness, shortness of breath, phlegm, wheezing); nosebleeds; eye irritation (burning, redness, conjunctivitis, potential serious damage); skin rash, burning, or allergic reactions. Chlorothalonil is rated highly toxic via inhalation.

Chronic/repeated exposure risks:
Cancer: Classified as a likely/probable human carcinogen in multiple assessments; linked to increased tumor risk with prolonged contact.
Neurological: Headaches, dizziness, potential longer-term neurobehavioral issues or links to conditions like Parkinson’s from broader pesticide classes.
Respiratory diseases: Aggravation or development of asthma, bronchitis, and other breathing problems.
Reproductive/developmental: Endocrine disruption, impacts on fertility, birth defects, or developmental harm (especially concerning for children and pregnant individuals).
Immune and other systemic: Weakened immune response, kidney effects, skin sensitization, and general increased chronic disease burden.

These aren't rare hypotheticals...pesticide drift is a documented issue with aerial applications, and lack of warning leaves communities unable to protect themselves (e.g., staying indoors, closing windows, avoiding outdoor activities).

This ties directly to a powerful story from someone I know:  the wife of an admiral (rest in peace). She has traveled the world extensively and survived breast cancer....twice.  Her experiences living in California during periods of pesticide spraying stuck with me when I learned about her concerns of being overly exposed to pesticides throughout her lifetime. At least there and then, they had the basic courtesy to warn people to stay indoors. That simple notification made a difference in how people could respond and protect their health.    It makes you wonder how many people would be alive today if pesticides were banned.

We deserve the same minimum standard here...no more silent drift exposures.   We need stronger local protections: mandatory prior public notifications for aerial/ground pesticide applications near residential areas, trails, and public spaces; clear buffer zones; and transparency on what’s being sprayed and when.

This isn’t anti-farming...it’s about balancing agriculture with public health and basic rights to know and avoid avoidable exposures amid rising cancer burdens.

If this resonates, please share the petition, sign if you haven’t, and contact local officials. Our health, our walks, our families...let’s push for change before more unnecessary exposures happen. Thank you for standing with us. Updates and ways to help coming soon.

P.S. Considering a lot of our future doctors are moonlighting as TikTok Dancers and may be desensitized to cruelty via years of screen time, I wouldn't take many chances when it comes to preventative health measures.
