The Issue

Drunk driving is a pervasive issue that continues to claim lives on our roads each year. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada, in Ontario alone, alcohol and/or drug impairment is a factor in more than half of all fatalities on the roads. Clearly, more effective measures need to be taken to reduce these preventable tragedies.

One powerful tool that has been proven effective in other areas is the use of pictorial health warnings. Inspired by the success of similar campaigns on tobacco products, these explicit visual warnings have proven capable of deterring risky behaviours. As a result, we propose that all alcoholic beverages in Ontario should carry clear, impactful pictorial warnings about the dangers of drunk driving.

This initiative is not just about enforcement but also education. Pictorial warning labels will serve as a constant, powerful visual reminder of the real-world consequences of driving under the influence. They will reach a broad audience and capture attention more effectively than textual warnings alone.

Research conducted by the World Health Organization supports this approach; pictorial warnings are more likely to engage emotional and cognitive responses and lead to behavioural changes. Given this evidence and Ontario’s commitment to reducing impaired driving, it only makes sense to adopt this proven strategy in our province.

We urge the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to mandate pictorial warnings on all alcoholic products. Together, we can foster a culture of responsibility and help save lives on our roads.

Stand with us in demanding change for safer roads in Ontario. Please sign this petition to make pictorial warnings on alcoholic beverages a reality.
