The Issue

In today's world, our consumption of music is no longer just about melody or rhythm but has become intertwined with the personal ideologies and statements made by artists. This is something I confronted recently when I discovered that some musicians with enormous public platforms have openly sided with or justified the actions that result in indiscriminate violence against children in Palestine—a stance I find morally reprehensible.

While these artists have every right to their views and beliefs, I too possess the right to decide whose creations I want to support and align myself with, even inadvertently. Music streaming services, which are the primary conduits of music to listeners worldwide, currently lack the capability for me to execute this decision fully. The absence of an 'artist block' feature means that music from creators whose views I fundamentally disagree with can still be sold, streamed, and recommended to me, completely against my wishes. This not only puts me in a position where I might unknowingly finance something I oppose but also strips me of my agency in music consumption.

The solution to this issue is straightforward and actionable: require all music streaming platforms to incorporate an artist block button into their interface. This feature would allow users to personally manage their music exposure, letting individuals block artists whose views they find unacceptable. Such a tool would empower users, granting them the choice not to inadvertently contribute financially, through streams or sales, to artists they do not agree with.

We live in an age where personalization is not just a luxury but a norm across digital platforms. We curate our news feeds and personalize our searches; music, being as personal a form of expression and consumption as it is, should be no different. Platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music have sophisticated algorithms capable of curating and personalizing user experiences. An artist block feature is not only technologically feasible but morally necessary.

By signing this petition, you can help push for essential changes in the way music services cater to their users. Let us urge these platforms to respect our moral and ethical standings as consumers. Join me in calling on music streaming services to uphold our rights by allowing us the freedom to choose which artists deserve our attention and support. Your signature can help bring about a more conscientious and personalized music streaming experience for all.
