Require MPs to resign when breaching the law or standards
The Issue
Too often, our elected Members of Parliament, who are supposed to be upholding our country's laws and standards, are not held to the same accountability we expect from ordinary citizens. This discrepancy is not just frustrating—it's unjust. If an average citizen breaks the law or violates work standards, they face direct and serious consequences, often resulting in job loss or legal penalties. Yet, there seems to be a double standard when it comes to MPs. Unless they are sentenced to more than twelve months in custody, they often escape with minimal repercussions. This is unacceptable for those representing the public.
We elect MPs to be exemplary in both their professional roles and public lives. When they fail to meet these obligations by breaking laws or breaching parliamentary standards, it is not merely their office role they damage—but the public trust, the integrity of democracy, and our nation's reputation at large. These offenses should demand resignation and a ban from rejoining any political party to ensure the highest standards are maintained by those in power.
Statistics show an alarming trend of trust in politics on the decline. According to the Hansard Society's 2023 Audit of Political Engagement, public confidence in MPs has fallen to worrying levels, largely due to instances of misconduct without consequential action. Requiring resignations and lifelong bans for offenders would demonstrate a commitment to accountability, reinforce integrity, and reassure confidence in our political system.
This change is both practical and vital for restoring faith in governance. By removing those who violate their oaths, we make room for leaders dedicated to transparency, fairness, and true public service.
Now is the time to act. Sign this petition to ensure that MPs who break the law or breach parliamemtary standards face the appropriate and necessary consequences. Stand for accountability, equality, and a system where no individual is above the rule of law.
