Require more accessible hoisted changing facilities
The Issue
As someone who works in supported living, I encounter firsthand the challenges that individuals with disabilities face when accessing community spaces. One of the most pressing issues is the noticeable lack of hoisted changing facilities. Even when these facilities are available, they often fail to accommodate individuals of varying shapes and sizes, particularly those who require more space. This lack severely restricts their ability to enjoy outings that most people take for granted, such as spending an afternoon in the park or visiting museums and shopping centers.
The discomfort and indignity that result from inadequate facilities are completely avoidable. In many locations, family restrooms are either absent or built without the forethought to include necessary accommodations such as hoists or sufficient space for larger individuals. This oversight limits the mobility of people who rely on these essential services, hindering their full participation in society.
Statistics show that 1 in 5 Americans have a disability, translating to approximately 20% of the population. That's millions of people potentially affected by this avoidable hindrance. Providing adequate hoisted changing facilities in community areas shouldn’t be a luxury but a necessity, a step toward inclusivity and dignity for everyone. City planners, community leaders, architects, and businesses can make a significant difference by reevaluating their current facilities and including proper accommodations in new developments.
We propose the introduction of policies that mandate the inclusion of hoisted changing facilities in all public spaces. These facilities must be accessible and fitting for individuals of all body types and sizes, and be standardized in their design and equipment. Local councils and governments should prioritize funding and development for these critical infrastructure upgrades.
Creating an inclusive society allows everyone to live with dignity, independence, and fun. Accessibility is a fundamental right that paves the way for equal participation and opportunity for all citizens. Let us stand together to ensure these changes are made. Please sign this petition to demand more hoisted changing facilities and promote accessibility for all.
