In February 2022, I lost my cousin to cancer. Two months prior to her death her children's father was killed in a road rage incident. These tragic events left three children orphaned. According to the social security Administration Jasmine had not accumulated enough credits for her children to receive survivors benefits. Jasmine accumulated 18 credits and the required number because of her age was 22. If she had worked and earned just 6 credits min 2 years prior to her death her children would have been eleigible. Because Jasmine was diagnosed in 2019, she had surgery and was receiving chemotherapy up and until her death she was advised by her medical team to refrain from working to limit the exposure of Covid-19. Jasmine's children are not eligble for social security survivor's benefits. I propose that there should be a minimum survivor benefit paid to orphaned children.
