As a parent, I am fearful for the safety of my children whenever they attend their public school here in Oklahoma. School safety has become an alarming concern due to the increasing incidents of violence that keep making national headlines. While no measure can completely eliminate the risk, it's imperative we take proactive steps to protect our children as they pursue their education.

This is why I'm advocating for the installation of metal detectors in all public schools across Oklahoma. While metal detectors may not prevent every potential tragedy, they serve as a critical first line of defense, capable of deterring and detecting weapons before they can be used to harm students and teachers. Implementing these security systems will demonstrate a tangible commitment to safety and show our children that their lives are valued.

According to a report from the U.S. Department of Justice, schools with metal detectors experience 34% fewer incidents of weapon possession. Investing in this technology is an actionable step toward reducing the risks our children face daily.

However, it's important that this initiative does not financially burden schools that are already stretched thin. Therefore, I propose that the installation and maintenance costs of the metal detectors be fully covered by state funds. This will ensure equitable implementation across all districts, regardless of their financial capabilities.

I urge Governor Kevin Stitt and the Oklahoma State Legislature to prioritize the safety of our children by mandating and funding the inclusion of metal detectors in every public school in the state. It's our duty to provide a safe learning environment where students can focus on education without fear.
