The issue

As teenagers, my siblings and I endured the torment of living with a father who was verbally and emotionally abusive. There were instances when we faced physical abuse as well. He should never have been a parent, yet there were no systems in place to prevent him from assuming this vital role. Sadly, my story is not unique. Countless Australian children are suffering in silence within their own homes, victims of domestic violence and neglect.

Roughly 39.6% (2 in 5) of all Australian children  are exposed to family and domestic violence.

To safeguard the future of our children, we must implement a mandatory testing system for all Australians who wish to become parents. This would include an assessment akin to a Working with Children check, aimed at evaluating whether individuals are fit to raise a child safely and responsibly. The current system fails to intervene until after abuse has occurred, which is far too late for many children.

The proposed test should be reassessed every two years to ensure ongoing suitability, and children should have the right to request their parents to retake the test if they feel it's necessary. By incorporating this precautionary measure, we stand a chance of reducing instances of family domestic violence and safeguarding those too vulnerable to protect themselves.

It is time we hold potential parents to the same standards as other individuals who work with children. Parenting is a privilege, not a right, and the safety and well-being of children must come first. Please join me in petitioning the Australian government to require mandatory parental suitability tests.
