Require male and female specific rooms in NSW public hospitals

The issue

My 68-year-old female friend was currently in a four-bed ward in a New South Wales (NSW) public hospital. The discomfort and embarrassment she experienced was overwhelming as she found herself sharing a 4 bed room  with two male patients, a young man in the bed in front of her and an adult male patient next to her. She was particularly distressed when using a pan or when she requires staff assistance in the bathroom, often leaving the door ajar due to necessity, which compromised her privacy immensely.

This scenario is unfortunately common in public hospitals across NSW, where mixed-gender wards are  prevalent. For many, especially elderly patients, this can lead to distress, anxiety, and a feeling of vulnerability.

A study has shown that patients feel more at ease and recover more comfortably in gender-specific wards (Towns,C and Ballantyne, A. 2/10/23. 'Blowing the whistle on mixed gender hospital rooms in Australia and New Zealand, a human rights issue'. Journal of Medical Ethics. August 2024 Volume 50-8. UK.).

Note that in the not too distant past gender specific rooms were the norm. The change to mixed gender rooms occurred by stealth without consultation with the women of  state of NSW.

By requiring gender-specific rooms, we can enhance the hospital experience for all patients. This change would cater to the dignity and privacy of individuals, protecting them from unnecessary discomfort and emotional distress during what is often a critical period of recovery. More so, it aligns with international best practices that prioritize patient-centered care.

We propose that the NSW Health Department implement a policy to ensure the availability of gender-specific rooms in public hospitals. This policy change is essential to safeguard the dignity of patients and to ensure they receive care in a respectful and secure environment.

Note also, that the image provided is AI generated due to the inability to find a photo that communicates the reality of a mixed male/female ward room in a public hospital. The image does not convey the closeness of beds and the flimsy curtain that aims to provide privacy.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a fundamental change that could significantly enhance the quality of care and dignity and respect experienced by patients in NSW public hospitals. Stand with us to make sure every patient receives the respect and privacy they deserve.
