The Issue

Before you take on law school debt, you deserve the version nobody gives first-generation students soon enough: the real cost is not always the sticker price, scholarship money is part of how schools compete for students, and the choices you make before enrollment can change your financial future for years. I am tired of watching people learn this only after they have already signed on for loans. That is backwards, and it hits first gen students especially hard.

Too many students walk into this process thinking tuition is fixed, scholarship offers are final, and borrowing is just the next step. Meanwhile, schools know that LSAT scores and GPA can shape scholarship offers, and they know students sometimes use one offer to negotiate with another. When that information is treated like insider knowledge instead of basic enrollment information, students without family or professional guidance are the ones left paying the highest price.

Law schools should be required to clearly disclose, before students commit, that the sticker price may not reflect what many students actually pay, that scholarship offers may be negotiated when a student has competing offers, and that students should understand all borrowing options before taking on debt. This does not require schools to admit every applicant or hand out unlimited aid. It requires honesty and transparency so students can make informed decisions before the loans, not after.

If you believe future law students should not have to decode the system on their own, please sign this petition. First gen students should not be punished for not having access to hidden rules. We need law schools to put the real financial picture in front of students from the start.
