Sanders graduated with a high school diploma from James Madison High School and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Chicago. His political career began in local government, serving as the Mayor of Burlington, Vermont, from 1981 to 1989. Sanders then represented Vermont as the At-Large Representative in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007. Since 2007, he has served as a U.S. Senator for Vermont. Bernie Sanders is an independent, aligning with the Democratic Party on many issues, and is known for his focus on economic inequality and universal healthcare.
